Mainly used as man-made fiber stabilizer, fabric bleaching agent, photographic developer, dyeing and bleaching deoxidizer, fragrance and dye reducing agent, paper lignin remover, etc.
Sodium sulfite (chemical formula: Na2SO3) is an inorganic compound. It is a white granule powder at room temperature, soluble in water, has reducing properties, disproportionates into sodium sulfide and sodium sulfate when heated, and gradually oxidizes to sodium sulfate when placed in the air.
It can exist in three forms: anhydrous, heptahydrate and decahydrate, among which the anhydrous is the most difficult to be oxidized. Its aqueous solution is alkaline due to hydrolysis, and toxic sulfur dioxide gas is released when acidified. Sodium sulfite can be produced by passing sulfur dioxide into sodium hydroxide solution. When sulfur dioxide is excessive, sodium bisulfite will be generated.
Sodium sulfite can be used as a developer, a preservative for dried fruits and meat, a deoxidizer in the printing and dyeing industry, and a reducing chemical reagent, which is used in the production and synthesis of chemicals and laboratories.
