Manganese dioxide is an inorganic compound, black amorphous powder or black orthorhombic crystal, insoluble in water, weak acid, weak base, nitric acid, cold sulfuric acid, dissolved in concentrated hydrochloric acid under heating to produce chlorine gas. It is used in the preparation of manganese salts, and is also used as an oxidizing agent, a rust remover, and a catalyst.

Application:

used as depolarizer for dry batteries, catalyst and oxidant in synthetic industry, colorant, decolorizer, iron remover in glass industry and enamel industry, etc. It is used in the manufacture of metal manganese, special alloys, ferromanganese castings, gas masks and electronic materials such as ferrite. In addition, it can also be used in the rubber industry to increase the viscosity of rubber. It can also be used as a catalyst in chemical experiments.

Manganese dioxide is a black or brown solid, which is the most stable oxide of manganese and often occurs in pyrolusite and manganese nodules. Pyrolulusite is the main mineral containing manganese; manganese nodules (seabed rock solidification) also contain manganese components.

The main use of manganese dioxide is to make dry batteries, such as carbon-zinc batteries and alkaline batteries; it is also often used as a catalyst in chemical reactions, such as the production of oxygen; or as a strong oxidant in acidic solutions. It can also be used as a reagent (oxidant) in organic synthesis, for example, for the oxidation of allyl alcohol. Manganese dioxide is also used as a pigment and as a precursor to other manganese compounds such as potassium permanganate (KMnO4).
